How would Fede Alvarez handle an Alien vs. Predator reboot? Not how you would think! During a recent interview with Collider, the Alien: Romulus director revealed what his approach would be with handling another crossover between two of science fiction's most iconic Alien antagonists.
Unlike the last two AvP films which overtly promoted the clash between both alien species, the consensus at 20th Century Studios now would be to keep the conflict a secret. As Fede describes in his interview, his approach would be to have audiences convinced they're going to see an Alien film or a Predator film and then surprise them by having the other creature revealed in the movie and not a moment before:
The way I would do it, most likely, if it could be done this way… It’s harder to keep secrets online… The best AVP will be the one that you don’t know is AVP until the other guy shows up. You think you’re watching a Predator movie, and then they land in some place and there are creatures, and fucking hell, it’s a Xenomorph. That would get me. ‘Fuck yeah!’ You’d go crazy. Or vice versa, you’re in an Alien movie, and then suddenly a mysterious creature is there, and you can hear that sound, and you see the cloak, and you go, ‘Is that a fucking Predator?’ And then turns out it is. That would be the way to do it, don’t you think? Once you put it in the title, it’s like, ‘Spoiler alert.’
This approach definitely sounds like one that would work (at least before the film's premiere) and from a marketing perspective, one that would be extremely entertaining to witness.
Previous to this Fede did express interest in potentially collaborating with Prey and Predator: Badlands director Dan Trachtenberg for an AvP reboot, but whether or not those two would have the opportunity to combine ideas and directorial duties on such a project have yet to be confirmed. One thing is for certain, 20th Century Studios are definitely motivated to explore this crossover again now that Alien and Predator are doing so well in their respective lanes.
